The State of Georgia has a program that makes getting diplomas and certificates more accessible for students that are interested in pursuing a career in one of twelve high demand industries.
The Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) announced new scholarship opportunities on June 15, 2016 through the Strategic Industries Workforce Development Grant (SIWDG), allowing students to receive free tuition to pursue a certificate or diploma in any of these high demand industries. High demand industries are defined as those where job openings significantly exceed available qualified applicants. Students must be high school graduates and meet eligibility for the HOPE Grant, awarded exclusively to TCSG students in order to get the additional funds from SIWDG funds. These two grants combined will pay almost 100% of tuition, fees, books and supplies.
The high demand industries include Movie Production and set Design, Commercial Truck Driving, Computer Technology, Practical Nursing, Certified Engineer Technician, Health Sciences, Diesel Equipment Technology, Industrial Maintenance Technology, and Computer Programming. There are significant shortages of applicants for these jobs at present, and this demand is expected to continue into the foreseeable future. Georgia employers are excited about this new initiative by the TCSG and are looking forward to having access to a pipeline of skilled workers that they can employ well into the future. TCSG students earned 52,000 degrees and diplomas in 2015 from the state’s 22 technical colleges. Today, 98% are employed or pursuing advanced education.
You can get more information from the Technical College System of Georgia web site under the heading “Strategic Industries”.
