    K–12 READING & MATHEMATICS INTERVENTION

When a student is a year behind, closing the gap may require a more targeted approach.

The Academic Performance Lab™ identifies the underlying skill gaps affecting a student's performance, develops a written plan to address them, provides explicit one-to-one instruction, and uses data to track progress.

    ADMISSION STANDARD

    Who the Lab is for.

The Academic Performance Lab is an intervention service, not general tutoring. A student is eligible when at least one of the following is true:

The student is at least one full year behind grade level in reading, mathematics, or both—based on school assessment data, standardized scores, report-card performance, prior evaluation, or SEC's baseline measure.
The student has a diagnosed or formally identified learning difference affecting reading or mathematics, including dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD, non-verbal learning disability, or another specific learning disability.

If the student mainly needs homework support, test preparation, subject-specific help, or general reinforcement, SEC will recommend Tutoring Services or another better fit instead of placing the student in a more intensive service.

    INTERVENTION VS. TUTORING

Intervention follows the skill—not tonight's assignment.

Tutoring and intervention are both valuable, but they solve different problems. Tutoring is the right service when the need is homework help, subject reinforcement, or test preparation. The Lab is the right service when an underlying skill gap is driving the struggle.

    THE FIVE-STAGE LAB CYCLE

A measured plan from first data point to next decision.

    01

    Clarify the target

Review concerns, records, instructional history, prior evaluations, and current demands.

    02

    Establish a usable baseline

Use brief curriculum- or criterion-referenced measures and error analysis, then write an individualized skill goal plan.

    03

    Teach explicitly and systematically

Model, guide accurate practice, correct errors promptly, review cumulatively, and apply the skill in increasingly authentic material.

    04

    Monitor and adapt

Collect performance data each session, compare the trend with the goal, and adjust pacing, practice, representation, or emphasis when needed.

    05

    Summarize the response

Describe growth, continuing needs, attendance and dosage context, and the recommended next instructional step.

    READING & MATHEMATICS FOCUS

Two skill areas, one individualized plan.

    Reading & Literacy

    May include:

Phonological & phonemic awarenessSound-symbol relationshipsDecodingEncoding & spelling patternsSyllable & morphology word analysisAccurate word recognitionPurposeful fluency practiceVocabularyText structureQuestioningMain idea & gistInferencingComprehension monitoringStructured written response

    Mathematics

    May include:

Number sensePlace valueConcrete & visual representationsConnections among models, language & symbolsSystematic modelingGuided practiceCumulative reviewError correctionFluency preserving conceptsMathematical languageWord-problem structuresStrategy selectionExplanation of thinkingError analysis

The exact targets, materials, and pace are selected from available data and adjusted to the student's response. Enrollment does not mean every listed area will be addressed.

    DEVELOPMENTALLY MATCHED

    One method, developmentally matched.

    Reading

Reading may emphasize foundational sound-symbol relationships, decoding, encoding, accuracy, and fluency.

    Mathematics

Math may emphasize number sense, place value, part-whole reasoning, facts, and operations.

    Approach

Shorter instructional cycles, high repetition, multisensory routines, movement, and pacing breaks where appropriate.

    MEASUREMENT & REPORTING

Families should be able to see what instruction is doing.

    Baseline + goal plan

Intake, record review, a brief curriculum- or criterion-referenced baseline, and a written individualized skill goal plan are completed within the early sessions and included in the program.

    SEC Progress Scorecard™

Performance and Accelerator include a concise scorecard every five sessions showing the target, data collected, observed trend, and current instructional response. It is a data snapshot, not a comprehensive narrative report.

    Benchmark review

Performance and Accelerator include a benchmark assessment and report every 20 hours of instruction using the same type of brief curriculum- or criterion-referenced measure—not a formal standardized evaluation.

Formal standardized or diagnostic testing, eligibility opinions, extensive records analysis, school observations, and comprehensive reports are separate services.

    PROGRAM LEVELS

Choose the intensity the gap requires.

    Foundations

    10 sessions · 1× weekly

Maintenance and consolidation for a narrow skill priority, holding gains after an intensive block, or a learner who retains and applies instruction with more time between sessions. Not designed to close a large gap on its own.

    Usual starting recommendation

    Performance

    20 sessions · 2× weekly

Repeated instruction and enough data to adjust the plan within a school term.

    Accelerator

    30 sessions · 2–4× weekly

Concentrated instruction for a significant gap when the fit, schedule, and student stamina support the frequency; frequency may step down as performance stabilizes.

A standard appointment reserves 60 minutes—approximately 50 minutes of direct one-to-one instruction plus up to 10 minutes for documentation, scoring, scheduling, and brief follow-up.

    Academic Performance Lab FAQ

    ONE TEAM, ONE PLAN

You are never the one relaying messages between specialists.

Families working across more than one of our practices get a single point of contact who oversees the whole plan. The college counselor, the executive function coach, and the academic specialists work from the same information about your student.

    BRING WHAT YOU HAVE

Bring what you have. We will help determine the right next step.

Report cards, test scores, an evaluation, or a teacher's note can help clarify the concern. SEC will tell you whether the Academic Performance Lab, general tutoring, testing, or another service is the better fit before enrollment.
