    OUR POSITION

“Couldn't we just use AI as our college counselor?”

It is a fair question, and we get it often. Here is our honest answer.

    LET'S START WITH WHAT'S TRUE

A great deal of what college counseling used to consist of is now free. AI can generate a college list in seconds. It can explain FAFSA, track deadlines, outline an essay, and answer almost any factual question about admissions faster than any human being. We are not going to pretend otherwise, and we would be suspicious of any counselor who did.

If information and organization were the whole job, you would not need us.

HERE IS WHAT IT CANNOT DO

Six things a tool will never do.

    Know your child over years.

An AI conversation starts fresh every time. After four years with a student we know how they respond to pressure, which encouragement lands and which doesn't, and what their work looks like when they are overwhelmed. That knowledge compounds. It cannot be prompted into existence.

Make a sixteen-year-old actually do it.

Every family we meet has already been given good advice. The gap is almost never information. It is execution — and execution requires a person who notices when the work didn't happen and follows up anyway.

    Be accountable.

When a plan does not work, we change it and we own it. An AI tool has no stake in your child's outcome and nobody to answer to when the answer was wrong.

Exercise judgment when the data is thin.

Should this student apply early decision? Should they disclose a diagnosis? Is this school worth the debt? These are judgment calls with real consequences made under real uncertainty, and they are what thirty years of experience is actually for.

    Sit in the room.

Some of our most valuable work happens in a hard conversation between a parent and a teenager who have stopped hearing each other. A neutral, trusted adult in that room changes the outcome.

Read an evaluation and act on it.

Our licensed evaluators produce psychoeducational assessments and then build the intervention from them. That chain — assess, interpret, intervene, measure — is clinical work, not information retrieval.

    WHAT THE RESEARCH SHOWS

We are not asking you to take our word for it.

    83%

A 2026 study from Cornell and Carnegie Mellon examined more than 81,000 college applications. Heavy reliance on AI was correlated with an 83% reduction in admission odds for lower-income applicants, and 62% for higher-income applicants. Correlation is not causation — but it is a striking pattern, and it runs directly opposite to what most families assume.

    50%

Roughly half of high school students already use AI in their college search, according to EAB research published in February 2026. The question is no longer whether your child will use these tools. It is whether anyone has taught them to use them well.

    The rules

The Common Application's fraud policy prohibits presenting as your own work the substantive content or output of an AI platform. The word “substantive” carries the weight: proofreading is fine, meaning and voice are not. A student flagged at one school can have every other school on their list notified.

    HOW WE USE IT

    Expert-led. AI-extended.

    Our educators use it.

Our counselors and coaches use carefully selected AI tools to prepare for sessions and track progress across many students, so more of each hour goes to judgment and less to paperwork.

Our students use it, with supervision.

Students working with SEC get support between sessions — breaking down an assignment, preparing questions for a counselor meeting, researching a college — grounded in what we already know about them.

Our students learn to use it.

Students learn what these tools do well, where they fail, how to verify what they produce, and where the ethical lines sit. This is a skill they will use for the rest of their working lives.

    OUR COMMITMENTS TO YOU
    • We never generate application content. We coach, we question, and we edit. The words are the student's.

    • We tell you where AI is used in our work. No hidden automation.

    • Nothing produced with AI reaches you or your child's school without a person reading it first.

    • Your child's information never goes into consumer AI tools. We use approved, agreement-backed systems only.

    • Parents can see what the student and our tools discussed. No black boxes involving your child.

    THE BOTTOM LINE
“You can get advice from AI for free. You are not paying us for advice. You are paying us to know your child, to make sure they act, and to be accountable when they don't.”

If a family's situation is genuinely simple — a strong, self-directed senior applying to three in-state schools — free tools may serve them well, and we will tell them so. Most families who call us are not in that situation.
